The Story

A cry that will resonate forever

Based on Émile Zola’s immortal novel, ‘Germinal’ dramatically portrays the birth of the first labor unions and the struggle for survival in 1860s France.

The story follows Étienne Lantier, a young idealist who arrives in Montsou, a mining town in northern France, seeking work after fleeing Paris. His encounter with this primitive society, where men, women, and children descend daily into the coal mines under precarious conditions, will open his eyes to a new world.

Inspired by the ideas of the emerging labor movement, Étienne decides to stay and undertake the mission of liberating the miners from their enslavement. His love for Catherine, a young miner, and the interests of the powerful will complicate his mission until dragging him to a tragic end. A story of hope where love, drama, and revolution intertwine in a strikingly relevant and contemporary tale.

The Soundtrack

A monumental symphonic score

This ambitious original production brings Émile Zola’s masterpiece to life with a symphonic structure reminiscent of major productions such as ‘Les Misérables’. Premiered in Madrid in January 2016 at the Teatro de la Luz Philips Gran Vía, the musical was presented in a staged symphonic concert version with 80 live musicians.

Iván Macías’s score, composed of 41 original songs with sung dialogue, elevates the narrative with epic musicality that captures the struggle, passion, and hope of the characters. The musical has been performed in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Aranjuez, and other Spanish cities.
